Do Good November 5, 2008
There was a time when I was pretty involved in politics. I hate to say it but I’m pretty out of touch with things now. Although I’ve always believed that nobody really knows what’s going on in Washington; nobody’s really as in touch as they’d like to think they are. People like to talk about statistics and the latest scandal, but I think the average American really only knows what the media puts out there and that’s sometimes far from the truth.
I watched the votes come in last night and I wasn’t surprised at the outcome. I’m neither excited nor disappointed. However, watching the people around America celebrating I realized just how much pressure is on our new president. Not only is there pressure on him to just successfully run the country, but fix this enormous financial crisis that has been years in the making AND by the way, bring the world together in peace. You could just see the expectation on people’s faces. People have placed so much hope in this man. I don’t know if he’s up for the job or not. I don’t know him. He may be the best president we’ve ever had and that would be great. But, it’s unnerving to me to see so many people looking to any human, man or woman, to make everything okay. I’m afraid these people are going to be disappointed at some point. He is after all, only a man. I wish and hope that those expectant faces I saw last night place that much faith in God.
I truly hope you are successful Mr. Obama. Just so you know though, this American isn’t placing those expectations on you. You are only human. So I will be praying for you and your administration. I hope God gives you and the people who advise you the wisdom, humility and courage to do good. Do good President Obama, do good.
Halloween is Here!!! October 31, 2008
It’s my favorite time of year! I love, love Fall and all the holiday festivities that are soon to come, starting with Halloween! Dylan and Ava have already had the chance to dress up for a party and today they are sporting their Halloween best at daycare. Tonight, Dylan will be going door to door and Ava will go along for the ride. Next year I anticipate a little more enthusiasm from Ava. Dylan wanted to go trick or treating this morning and was very disappointed when I told her she would have to wait until tonight. Here are some preview photos from the party we attended. Jimmy will take more tonight and I’ll try to get some video for you. Enjoy!

Someone’s Got My Number October 24, 2008
Over the past few months we’ve been getting random phone calls from people who claim that we called them. They say that they checked their caller ID and are calling us back. First of all, why would you do that? I call people back who leave me a message, but I don’t scroll through my caller ID and call people and ask why they called me. Anyway, it’s always someone out of state and they sound like they are older. They always have lots of questions. Where am I, who am I, what’s my area code and number, (um, didn’t you just call me?). I have no idea how long they would continue to ask me questions because I feel like if I talk too long they will be able to locate me with some spyware or something. I can just see someone standing behind them with a stopwatch saying, “1 more minute and we’ve got her!”.
I don’t know if these people are the scamers or if they are being scammed just like me. Or is there even a scam? I didn’t call those people. I have no idea how my home phone number showed up on their caller ID. Can someone use your number? Can they tap into your phone line to disguise who they are? In today’s world I’m sure it’s possible. My concern is, am I being charged something, or is this detrimental to my family in some way?
Yesterday I got one of these calls. Same situation, older lady (always a lady) calls and says I called her and she’s calling me back – my number is on her caller ID. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, believing that she’s being scammed as well, and I explained what’s been happening. She ignored what I said and continued with her questions. Then I told her that she could be part of the scam for all I knew. That’s when she lost it on me. She starts screaming at me that she had nothing to do with… I hung up. Of course she called back, but this time she asked for David Smith with the nicest tone in her voice. Maybe the next time I get one of those calls I’m mess with them. Hey, I’ll prank the caller! It’s been a long time since I did any prank phone calls.
- Does this happen to anyone else?
- Have you ever heard of this scam?
- Do you have any good prank the caller suggestions (something I can keep under 2 minutes, cause you know they are honing in on me each second I’m on the phone).
Dreams October 13, 2008
Last night our oldest daughter fell asleep on the couch next to my husband and I. We commented on what a sweet face she has and how peaceful she looked. Jimmy commented that he really wanted her to take piano lessons and of course the cello lessons that I had mentioned I’d like her to take. Then there’s the dance lessons - ballet and tap, acting lessons, t-ball, gymnastics, art lessons, Spanish and French lessons – I could go on and on. We’ve talked about all of these opportunities for our girls. As she lay there sleeping, I thought, ‘she has no idea what we’re hoping and dreaming up for her.’ Of course there’s no point in telling her all of this now. She’d just stare at us wide eyed and say something like, ‘can I have a juice box?’ On each of my daughter’s birthday I write them a letter and tell them how they’ve grown in the past year and what I hope for them in the future. I want to make sure they know that we want the best for them, but we don’t want to pressure them. We totally realize that our dreams may not be their dreams. They can choose to be who they are comfortable being. We just want them to be kind, good people first and foremost.
I remember one time my mom told me that she and my dad had a similar conversation. My mom said she told my dad that I was going to be Miss America and my dad said I was going to be a weather girl. Hmmmm, sorry to disappoint. My mom told me that when I was young, maybe high school or even younger. It stuck with me though. Our parents expectations, dreams or hopes for us have a lasting affect I guess.
Someday, when Dylan can understand, I’ll tell her that even at the tender age of three I see a little girl who cares if she hurts someone’s feelings, who asks how people are feeling when they are sick or hurt, who protects her little sister, who loves to tell people about her little sister, who loves to be creative and loves to read stories. She’s sweet and loving to her teachers and friends and everyone is her friend. She’s strong willed and someday that will be a great thing. I’m already so proud of who she is becoming.
Ava is still very young at only 20 months. Already I see a happy little girl who knows how to go with the flow. I guess that comes from being the second child. She’s very laid back, but when she wants something, she knows how to get it. She’s also very loving and she loves to play with her big sister. She loves our two dogs. Maybe she’ll be a veterinarian! She loves to stomp on the toy piano. Maybe she’ll be a professional musician! She is pretty reserved, but quickly coming into her own and making herself heard. She just told me the other day, ‘I pee pee’. Maybe she’ll be an urologist!
What hopes and dreams do you have for your children?
My Babies! October 10, 2008
OKay, they aren’t always perfect little angels, but they sure are putting on a good act in this photo! Isn’t it just the sweetest thing you’ve ever seen?!?!!?
Family Photo Time with Paul Wharton October 7, 2008
When Jimmy and I got married we lucked out and found the most fantastic photographer. His name is Paul Wharton and if you need a photographer for anything, I recommend him! He is so nice, encouraging, flexible and just one of those people you love to be around. He also has all that fancy editing stuff to make you look good.
We saw him this past weekend for our annual family photography session. Here are just a few from the over 300 he took for us. His website is www.paulwharton.com so check out his work.
Homecoming September 23, 2008
One reason why I enjoy working at a high school is that it keeps me young. When I first started working here three years ago I remember walking into the building and thinking, it smells just like my high school. The smell in the air was the same at football games and the sound of the percussion section of the band brought a familiar smile to my face. I enjoyed high school. I know a lot of people didn’t have good experiences, but I enjoyed it. There are certainly things I would do differently. I think I would have wandered outside of my little circle of friends more. I wouldn’t have let the petty girl things bother me as much. I would have stayed in better touch with some of my friends over the years and I would have carefully considered what college I chose to attend. I see the same issues today in the students I work with. I can’t tell them what to do, they have to figure it out on their own like I did. And they will, in time, figure things out. I see some of them trying to get out of here as soon as possible and some who are taking the time to enjoy this moment in their life.
This week is one of those moments for them to cherish. It’s homecoming week! There’s a football game, parade, pep rally, king and queen, dance, every day we dress up in some crazy way and the entire community gets involved. You can feel the excitement in the air! If the students are excited about something, chances are the teachers are too. I’m watching the weather channel just like every kid in this school when they start talking snow… Homecoming is no different. Lots of excitement all around. That’s the kind of stuff that makes you feel young again.
I’ve never been back to my high school homecoming. I think it would be fun to go to a game and maybe run into some old friends and teachers.
Have you ever gone back to your high school homecoming?
I Need Your Input September 12, 2008
So I’m trying to get my own little business started. Basically I want to help students and parents through the college application process. I’m also considering setting up college tour groups. I have a website www.collegeknowledge.wordpress.comif you want to check it out. I need to know if you like the name College Knowledge or do you like the name College Compass better? Also, if you do check out the website let me know what you think. What do you like about it or not like? I’ve been occupied with this lately and that’s why you haven’t seen any posts. More to come later! Feel free to make a comment. Thanks for visiting!
