Tonight we got to see our little star in her first performance. Okay, she didn’t have any lines or anything, but her preschool program put on a great show. Here’s a little sample. You can’t see Dylan very well, but it’s the music that counts and it couldn’t be sweeter.
Bam’s House December 16, 2008
Recently, we took a trip to Kentucky to visit Bam. The girls always love to see the horses run around on the farm. Here’s a little video to share with you. No little girls were harmed in the making of this video… no pony tails were eaten…
Santa! December 14, 2008
We took the girls to see Santa today. I asked Dylan what she was going to ask Santa to bring her and she said a baby doll, a book and a baby brother. Ok then… wasn’t expecting that one.
We were very curious about how the girls would respond to santa this year. Last year Ava didn’t want anything to do with him and she screamed and cried and Dylan did okay, but promptly threw up afterwards. This year I’m happy to report that both girls were happy to see santa! Here’s a video to prove it. Hope you enjoy!
What’s the funniest thing your child has ever done while visiting santa?
It Doesn’t Take Much December 13, 2008
Last night we got about an inch of snow and so all the area schools were out today. It doesn’t take much snow around here to get us out of school! We’re lucky like that. I took a short video this morning of the new fallen snow. Enjoy it while it lasts. Most of it is gone now.
The Best Boyfriend Ever November 26, 2008
As I walked the halls of my school I kept hearing the girls talk about this guy who was the “best boyfriend ever!” I went to cheerleading practice and they were also talking about this guy who was “the kind of boyfriend they wanted.” So I asked them, what’s this guy’s name? They said, Edward. Then I asked the most out of touch question possible, “does he go to school here?” I was met by laughter and a big “No, Mrs. S., he’s a character in this new book, Twilight!” “He’s a vampire and aside from possibly killing you, he’s the best boyfriend ever!”
I have girlfriends who have read all four books in this series and they describe Edward as “the best man ever.” What is it about this vampire man that has girls and women swooning? I haven’t read these books, yet. When I was in high school and college I was all into the Anne Rice vampire novels. I understood the draw to a certain extent, but it wasn’t until I saw the movie last night that it all came rushing back to me.
I agree, Edward is the best boyfriend/man ever – aside from the fact that he might kill you. He’s totally into you, only interested in you, forever dedicated to you, tells you that “you are my life now” and “I don’t think I can stay away from you much longer.” He’s protective of you and his family, and whenever the two of you are in a room, everyone knows you ‘belong’ together. What woman wouldn’t want that?
So tell me ladies, or gentlemen, what is it about Edward that you think makes him the best guy ever?
Sandy November 24, 2008
I don’t usually promote fundraisers or give money to charities. My husband and I prefer to do hands on charitable work for a couple of reasons. By doing work ourselves we know where the “money” or charity is going and we get a lot more out of it. We gain an appreciation, knowledge, empathy, etc. for a person or group of people that need help. You can’t get that from just writing a check.
I get a lot of emails at work during the day. We have a lot of clubs and organizations at my school that do fundraisers, especially at this time of year. Most of them I pass on. Until I read this email. Before I share the email with you, I want to give you a little background.
I work with students whose last names begin with A-F. A particular boy’s mother (Sandy) came into my life during his freshman year. She came to all the PTO meetings and informational meetings and was always so vibrant. I liked her immediately. I met with her a few times to discuss school stuff and again, very nice and easy to get along with. Each time I saw her I would comment on how good of shape she’s in. She looks phenomenal! She’s the picture of health. I asked her if she worked out every day and told her that I needed to start going to the gym with her if I wanted to get back in shape. She was always very humble and equally as complimentary (although she shouldn’t have been). I mean she’s in great shape!
Then, like I said above, I got this email from our DECA sponsor and I nearly fell out of my chair.
Sandy’s Story
Sandy Flanigan is a mother in the Brentwood community who has been battling with health problems over the past 12 years. She has a child who is attending, and other children who have attended, Brentwood High School.
In 1996, her health problems started with herniated discs, which required four lower back surgeries, including a spinal fusion. Unfortunately, the Flanigans’ insurance company raised their premium, which caused them to have to obtain insurance with another company. In August of 1999, Sandy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. The doctors gave little or no hope for a cure, and told her they didn’t think she would survive more than 3 weeks to 6 months. However, that negative outlook didn’t affect Sandy. She changed doctors and stayed positive. Sadly, the Flanigans were dropped once again by the new insurance company. Luckily, Sandy then obtained Tenncare coverage, but the week of Christmas 2004, Sandy suffered a heart attack while working out at the YMCA. The cardiovascular surgeon discovered Sandy had an Ascending Aortic Aneurysm.
While prepping for surgery, doctors discovered she had a malfunctioning aortic valve. The week before open heart surgery, the Flanigans were notified that yet again they were being dropped from their insurance company. With her many health issues, no company will carry Sandy. Each chemo treatment costs $20,000. She needs another treatment in January that will require the Flanigans to come up with $7,000 before their new insurance will cover the treatment. Your participation in this endeavor to help raise the funds to cover the cost of the chemo treatments will be extremely valuable. Please consider donating items that could be auctioned, buying tickets to the event, or making a donation to The Sandy Flanigan Fund. The Flanigans are an inspiring family. Sandy has more bravery than almost anyone. Even with all the hardship and strife surrounding her medical circumstances, she continues to stay positive and believes that she will fight through all of this. She is truly an incredible woman who is the strength behind an incredible family. Please help Brentwood High School DECA rally behind Sandy and her wonderful family.
This woman, the picture of health, had never once said anything to me about her medical issues. Never once did she complain, never once did she have a bad attitude. As a mother myself, I can only image what she’s going through and what her family is going through. This is someone that deserves help. I can say that from personal experience. So, I’m asking for your help. Please go to the link above and take part in this wonderful opportunity to help a person and family in need. Thank you!
The Bentley November 22, 2008
In my last post I told you about my Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman sighting… why hasn’t the media combined their names? Keith, Nicole. Let’s see there’s….Neithole, Nicth, Keithcole – I’ll go with that one, Keithcole. Anyway, let me know if you come up with a better one…
I wasn’t allowed, yes allowed, to take photo or video tape the couple because my friend Becky was afraid we’d get kicked out of the restaurant, BUT I did video their Bentley in the parking lot. What’s that you say? Did you just call me a stalker? No, no, no… I was seriously silly when the magical moment of Keith Urban standing next to me happened, I guess that giddiness followed me to the parking lot. But I promise, I’m not a stalker. These things just NEVER happen to me! It was exciting people! So, here’s the video… silliness and all!
Dinner with Keith and Nicole! November 20, 2008
I had dinner with Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman last night! Okay, my friend Becky and I had dinner with Keith and Nicole last night. Um, fine… my friend Becky, myself and everyone else at Peter’s Sushi had dinner with Keith and Nicole last night. If you’re in the same restaurant with someone aren’t you having dinner together? Kind of? In a round about way?
Anyway, it was very exciting! Becky and I had only been sitting down for a couple of minutes and we just got our glasses of wine when Becky suddenly says “behind you!, behind you!” The next thing I know the guy at the table next to us stands up and says, “Hey Keith, man how are you?” I look up and YES, there he is, Keith Urban standing right next to me! I mean right next to me! He talked with the guy for a few minutes (he was in the music business) while I took a big gulp of wine and noticed everyone looking at me like…”do you know who is standing next to you?” I was looking back at them like “I KNOW, can you believe it?!?!” Becky said my face turned red and I started breaking out in hives. -lovely-
They sat at the sushi bar and everyone went about their business. Well except the two crazy women on the other side of the restaurant. I wanted to very discretely take a photo for my blog, but Becky said she would basically die of embarrassment, so I didn’t. I decided though that as we walked out and got to the lobby I would take out my digital camera and take a photo for proof. I turned it on inside my purse and was met with these words… memory card full! Which I didn’t realize I said out loud for everyone in the lobby to hear and they broke out into laughter because they knew exactly what I was up to!
I had heard that the lovely couple drives a Bentley, so I scanned the parking lot and FOUND IT! I took a video of the car – that’s all the proof I have of the chance encounter. I will post it later.
Oh, for you fellas, Nicole looked lovely. She’s very statuesque, dressed in all black, so chic. She had her curly locks up and her flawless skin was radiant. Oh and she’s super skinny. How old is that baby? I need to get the name of her trainer! But anyway, back to Keith!
Did I mention he was STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME?
Child Possessed! November 13, 2008
I think my three year old is possessed. Seriously. I’m not even kidding. Lately she’s been going into these manic, crazed, fits… okay maybe it’s just a three year old tantrum, but it sure appears as though something has creeped into my sweet little girl and taken over her body and turned her into a nonsensical, irrational, out of control child.
I got to witness one of these episodes this evening as did my entire church small group. All of the children were playing down stairs when I was notified that Dylan had a problem. I went down to see what the problem was and that’s when it all started. She decided she wanted to come upstairs with me instead of staying downstairs with the other kids. I tried to explain to her (on her level, in a calm, quiet voice super nanny) why she couldn’t come upstairs with me. She was not happy so I thought I’ll give it a try and let her come upstairs with me. She had an ‘accident’ and I thought maybe she was embarrassed. I told her she had to be quiet and sit still because the adults were trying to talk. She agreed. Well it wasn’t soon after we got upstairs that she started talking, squirming, etc. So I told her she would have to go back downstairs. She lost it and then Jimmy went to talk to her. He took her downstairs and we could all hear her screaming her head off the entire way – the demon was released! She was completely irrational, out of control, POSSESSED! I decided to see what was going on and when I opened the door to go downstairs I was met with “we’re going home”. We gathered everything up and then Dylan started screaming that she wanted to go back down stairs! WHAT?!?!?! Isn’t that what we just asked you to do? It was past the point of going down stairs so we quickly said goodbye and rushed out the door with Dylan waking up the entire neighborhood. MORTIFIED, would be how I felt. I was one of those mother’s who couldn’t control their child.
I recorded her continual fit all the way home. I contemplated putting it on here for your viewing, but I won’t subject you to that. So does anyone know a good exorcist? It’s all funny now – now that she’s asleep in her bed and QUIET! We can look back on this and laugh, but this is happening too often. I know I have to stand my ground.. do what I say I’m going to do… be consistent…. yeah, yeah, yeah… I’ll continue to do all of that. I sure can’t reason with her. You can’t reason with a three year old. I’m a counselor and I know how to counsel kids… but not a three year old that can’t be reasoned with AND that happens to be MY kid.
So, this is my public apology to my church small group. I”m really sorry you had to witness that. If you’re still there and haven’t closed with a prayer yet, say one for us!
Worn Out! November 6, 2008
When we were on vacation at the beach recently Dylan must have worn her little self out because she fell asleep in the middle of eating a french fry. I wish it was this easy to get her to sleep every night!
