One reason why I enjoy working at a high school is that it keeps me young. When I first started working here three years ago I remember walking into the building and thinking, it smells just like my high school. The smell in the air was the same at football games and the sound of the percussion section of the band brought a familiar smile to my face. I enjoyed high school. I know a lot of people didn’t have good experiences, but I enjoyed it. There are certainly things I would do differently. I think I would have wandered outside of my little circle of friends more. I wouldn’t have let the petty girl things bother me as much. I would have stayed in better touch with some of my friends over the years and I would have carefully considered what college I chose to attend. I see the same issues today in the students I work with. I can’t tell them what to do, they have to figure it out on their own like I did. And they will, in time, figure things out. I see some of them trying to get out of here as soon as possible and some who are taking the time to enjoy this moment in their life.
This week is one of those moments for them to cherish. It’s homecoming week! There’s a football game, parade, pep rally, king and queen, dance, every day we dress up in some crazy way and the entire community gets involved. You can feel the excitement in the air! If the students are excited about something, chances are the teachers are too. I’m watching the weather channel just like every kid in this school when they start talking snow… Homecoming is no different. Lots of excitement all around. That’s the kind of stuff that makes you feel young again.
I’ve never been back to my high school homecoming. I think it would be fun to go to a game and maybe run into some old friends and teachers.
Have you ever gone back to your high school homecoming?
