Dinner with Keith and Nicole! November 20, 2008

I had dinner with Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman last night!  Okay, my friend Becky and I had dinner with Keith and Nicole last night.  Um, fine… my friend Becky, myself and everyone else at Peter’s Sushi had dinner with Keith and Nicole last night.  If you’re in the same restaurant with someone aren’t you having dinner together?  Kind of?  In a round about way?

Anyway, it was very exciting!  Becky and I had only been sitting down for a couple of minutes and we just got our glasses of wine when Becky suddenly says “behind you!, behind you!”  The next thing I know the guy at the table next to us stands up and says, “Hey Keith, man how are you?”  I look up and YES, there he is, Keith Urban standing right next to me!  I mean right next to me!  He talked with the guy for a few minutes (he was in the music business) while I took a big gulp of wine and noticed everyone looking at me like…”do you know who is standing next to you?”  I was looking back at them like “I KNOW, can you believe it?!?!”  Becky said my face turned red and I started breaking out in hives.  -lovely-

They sat at the sushi bar and everyone went about their business.  Well except the two crazy women on the other side of the restaurant.  I wanted to very discretely take a photo for my blog, but Becky said she would basically die of embarrassment, so I didn’t.  I decided though that as we walked out and got to the lobby I would take out my digital camera and take a photo for proof.  I turned it on inside my purse and was met with these words… memory card full!  Which I didn’t realize I said out loud for everyone in the lobby to hear and they broke out into laughter because they knew exactly what I was up to!

I had heard that the lovely couple drives a Bentley, so I scanned the parking lot and FOUND IT!  I took a video of the car - that’s all the proof I have of the chance encounter.  I will post it later.

Oh, for you fellas, Nicole looked lovely.  She’s very statuesque, dressed in all black, so sheik.  She had her curly locks up and her flawless skin was radiant.  Oh and she’s super skinny.  How old is that baby?  I need to get the name of her trainer!  But anyway, back to Keith!

Did I mention he was STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME?

Child Possessed! November 13, 2008

Filed under: Girls, church group, possessed, tantrum — collegeknowledge @ 3:28 am

I think my three year old is possessed.  Seriously.  I’m not even kidding.  Lately she’s been going into these manic, crazed, fits… okay maybe it’s just a three year old tantrum, but it sure appears as though something has creeped into my sweet little girl and taken over her body and turned her into a nonsensical, irrational, out of control child.

I got to witness one of these episodes this evening as did my entire church small group.  All of the children were playing down stairs when I was notified that Dylan had a problem.  I went down to see what the problem was and that’s when it all started.  She decided she wanted to come upstairs with me instead of staying downstairs with the other kids.  I tried to explain to her (on her level, in a calm, quiet voice super nanny) why she couldn’t come upstairs with me.  She was not happy so I thought I’ll give it a try and let her come upstairs with me.  She had an ‘accident’ and I thought maybe she was embarrassed.  I told her she had to be quiet and sit still because the adults were trying to talk.  She agreed.  Well it wasn’t soon after we got upstairs that she started talking, squirming, etc.  So I told her she would have to go back downstairs.  She lost it and then Jimmy went to talk to her.  He took her downstairs and we could all hear her screaming her head off the entire way - the demon was released!   She was completely irrational, out of control, POSSESSED!  I decided to see what was going on and when I opened the door to go downstairs I was met with “we’re going home”.  We gathered everything up and then Dylan started screaming that she wanted to go back down stairs!  WHAT?!?!?!  Isn’t that what we just asked you to do?  It was past the point of going down stairs so we quickly said goodbye and rushed out the door with Dylan waking up the entire neighborhood.  MORTIFIED, would be how I felt.  I was one of those mother’s who couldn’t control their child.

I recorded her continual fit all the way home.  I contemplated putting it on here for your viewing, but I won’t subject you to that.  So does anyone know a good exorcist?  It’s all funny now - now that she’s asleep in her bed and QUIET!  We can look back on this and laugh, but this is happening too often.  I know I have to stand my ground.. do what I say I’m going to do…  be consistent….  yeah, yeah, yeah…  I’ll continue to do all of that.  I sure can’t reason with her.  You can’t reason with a three year old.  I’m a counselor and I know how to counsel kids… but not a three year old that can’t be reasoned with AND that happens to be MY kid.

So, this is my public apology to my church small group.  I”m really sorry you had to witness that.  If you’re still there and haven’t closed with a prayer yet, say one for us!

Worn Out! November 6, 2008

When we were on vacation at the beach recently Dylan must have worn her little self out because she fell asleep in the middle of eating a french fry.  I wish it was this easy to get her to sleep every night!

There was a time when I was pretty involved in politics.  I hate to say it but I’m pretty out of touch with things now.  Although I’ve always believed that nobody really knows what’s going on in Washington; nobody’s really as in touch as they’d like to think they are.  People like to talk about statistics and the latest scandal, but I think the average American really only knows what the media puts out there and that’s sometimes far from the truth.

I watched the votes come in last night and I wasn’t surprised at the outcome.  I’m neither excited nor disappointed.  However, watching the people around America celebrating I realized just how much pressure is on our new president.  Not only is there pressure on him to just successfully run the country, but fix this enormous financial crisis that has been years in the making AND by the way, bring the world together in peace.  You could just see the expectation on people’s faces.  People have placed so much hope in this man.  I don’t know if he’s up for the job or not.  I don’t know him.  He may be the best president we’ve ever had and that would be great.  But, it’s unnerving to me to see so many people looking to any human, man or woman, to make everything okay.  I’m afraid these people are going to be disappointed at some point.  He is after all, only a man.  I wish and hope that those expectant faces I saw last night place that much faith in God.

I truly hope you are successful Mr. Obama.  Just so you know though, this American isn’t placing those expectations on you.  You are only human.  So I will be praying for you and your administration.  I hope God gives you and the people who advise you the wisdom, humility and courage to do good.  Do good President Obama, do good.

Halloween is Here!!! October 31, 2008

Filed under: Girls, Halloween, Party — collegeknowledge @ 5:42 pm

It’s my favorite time of year!  I love, love Fall and all the holiday festivities that are soon to come, starting with Halloween!  Dylan and Ava have already had the chance to dress up for a party and today they are sporting their Halloween best at daycare.  Tonight, Dylan will be going door to door and Ava will go along for the ride.  Next year I anticipate a little more enthusiasm from Ava.  Dylan wanted to go trick or treating this morning and was very disappointed when I told her she would have to wait until tonight.  Here are some preview photos from the party we attended.  Jimmy will take more tonight and I’ll try to get some video for you.  Enjoy!

Someone’s Got My Number October 24, 2008

Filed under: phone calls, phone scams, prank calls — collegeknowledge @ 3:35 pm

Over the past few months we’ve been getting random phone calls from people who claim that we called them.  They say that they checked their caller ID and are calling us back.  First of all, why would you do that?  I call people back who leave me a message, but I don’t scroll through my caller ID and call people and ask why they called me.  Anyway, it’s always someone out of state and they sound like they are older.  They always have lots of questions.  Where am I, who am I, what’s my area code and number, (um, didn’t you just call me?).  I have no idea how long they would continue to ask me questions because I feel like if I talk too long they will be able to locate me with some spyware or something.  I can just see someone standing behind them with a stopwatch saying, “1 more minute and we’ve got her!”.

I don’t know if these people are the scamers or if they are being scammed just like me.  Or is there even a scam?  I didn’t call those people.  I have no idea how my home phone number showed up on their caller ID.  Can someone use your number?  Can they tap into your phone line to disguise who they are?  In today’s world I’m sure it’s possible.  My concern is, am I being charged something, or is this detrimental to my family in some way?

Yesterday I got one of these calls.  Same situation, older lady (always a lady) calls and says I called her and she’s calling me back - my number is on her caller ID.  I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, believing that she’s being scammed as well, and I explained what’s been happening.  She ignored what I said and continued with her questions.  Then I told her that she could be part of the scam for all I knew.  That’s when she lost it on me.  She starts screaming at me that she had nothing to do with…  I hung up.  Of course she called back, but this time she asked for David Smith with the nicest tone in her voice.  Maybe the next time I get one of those calls I’m mess with them.  Hey, I’ll prank the caller!  It’s been a long time since I did any prank phone calls.

  • Does this happen to anyone else?
  • Have you ever heard of this scam?
  • Do you have any good prank the caller suggestions (something I can keep under 2 minutes, cause you know they are honing in on me each second I’m on the phone).

Dreams October 13, 2008

Filed under: Children, Girls, Hopes, Memories, dreams — collegeknowledge @ 7:05 pm

Last night our oldest daughter fell asleep on the couch next to my husband and I.  We commented on what a sweet face she has and how peaceful she looked.  Jimmy commented that he really wanted her to take piano lessons and of course the cello lessons that I had mentioned I’d like her to take.  Then there’s the dance lessons - ballet and tap, acting lessons, t-ball, gymnastics, art lessons, Spanish and French lessons - I could go on and on.  We’ve talked about all of these opportunities for our girls.  As she lay there sleeping, I thought, ’she has no idea what we’re hoping and dreaming up for her.’  Of course there’s no point in telling her all of this now.  She’d just stare at us wide eyed and say something like, ‘can I have a juice box?’  On each of my daughter’s birthday I write them a letter and tell them how they’ve grown in the past year and what I hope for them in the future.  I want to make sure they know that we want the best for them, but we don’t want to pressure them.  We totally realize that our dreams may not be their dreams.  They can choose to be who they are comfortable being.  We just want them to be kind, good people first and foremost.

I remember one time my mom told me that she and my dad had a similar conversation.  My mom said she told my dad that I was going to be Miss America and my dad said I was going to be a weather girl.  Hmmmm,  sorry to disappoint.  My mom told me that when I was young, maybe high school or even younger.  It stuck with me though.  Our parents expectations, dreams or hopes for us have a lasting affect I guess.

Someday, when Dylan can understand, I’ll tell her that even at the tender age of three I see a little girl who cares if she hurts someone’s feelings, who asks how people are feeling when they are sick or hurt, who protects her little sister, who loves to tell people about her little sister, who loves to be creative and loves to read stories.  She’s sweet and loving to her teachers and friends and everyone is her friend.  She’s strong willed and someday that will be a great thing.  I’m already so proud of who she is becoming.

Ava is still very young at only 20 months.  Already I see a happy little girl who knows how to go with the flow.  I guess that comes from being the second child.  She’s very laid back, but when she wants something, she knows how to get it.  She’s also very loving and she loves to play with her big sister.  She loves our two dogs.  Maybe she’ll be a veterinarian!  She loves to stomp on the toy piano.  Maybe she’ll be a professional musician!  She is pretty reserved, but quickly coming into her own and making herself heard.  She just told me the other day, ‘I pee pee’.  Maybe she’ll be an urologist!

What hopes and dreams do you have for your children?

When Jimmy and I got married we lucked out and found the most fantastic photographer.  His name is Paul Wharton and if you need a photographer for anything, I recommend him!  He is so nice, encouraging, flexible and just one of those people you love to be around.  He also has all that fancy editing stuff to make you look good.

We saw him this past weekend for our annual family photography session.  Here are just a few from the over 300 he took for us.  His website is www.paulwharton.com so check out his work.
